      When we looked at VA, Roanoke ended up as the 5 most affordable & LGBTQ friendly city in the state. It got an 86/100 on HRCs Municipal Equality Index, which kept it from being higher. What’s your experience like living there?

    • @pblackcrow
      @pblackcrow 5 днів тому

      @@queermoney I am probably going to be moving there next year. Right now, I am in TN and hate the crap that is going on here! Johnson City has became a city of the MAGA cult. I LOVE Roanoke. It is a bastion for liberals and progressive. An Amtrak station, kendo, fencing, large library. an actual gay library, friendly people, UU Church, soccer, rugby, not far from a Buddhist monastery, Buddhist temple being built there when I was there last, LOTS of role-playing games, and is about 3-4 hours from Norfolk and Alexandrea where my Mother's family are. It's sort of like Knoxville, without the absolute bull that goes on there.

      Wow that’s a pretty judgmental statement! Mark and his husband moved to FL over 10 years ago. This was before De Sanctimonious became governor and the state legislature and executive branch went to $hit. Pluse there are an estimated 900,000 LGBTQ folks living in the state. We all make choices on what’s best for our own circumstances. Many choose places or stay in places because of needs/wants that you have zero experience with. There is no perfect city in any state for everyone in the queer community. We all have to find one that is the best for us individually or for our family as much as possible. Seems like Milwaukee is coming out on or near the top in many of our city analyses. It’s one we want to go check out.

    Another interesting video, guys! Thanks for some food for thought. I am thinking mostly in terms of where I hope to retire to, and home affordability, including property taxes and insurance, is a major consideration. It makes Detroit an especially intriguing place for consideration.....if only I wanted to be in a big city. My all-time favorite home rennovation show is set in Detroit, "Bargain Block," with rough and adorable gay couple Keith and Evan starring in it. Such a contrast from another gay couple of rennovators, Nate & Jeremiah, with their million dollar homes they design for. Dayton is also intriguing to me, in large part because it is so close to Cincinnati, a place I love but can't afford. I would love to see a video on most affordable small towns within an hour of great lgbtq-vibrant cities. A lot of small towns I assume would not even bother to try to be listed on HRC-municipal equality index, so there would need to be other considerations. I have said before, some towns that score 90 or 80 or even 70 are probably getting ignored but shouldn't be, especially if near to a great queer- friendly city.

      Unfortunately your last paragraph is not a reality for some major cities. Brevard county or space coast is 45 minutes from Orlando. Brevard is a very low paying county, they say cost of living is low but we have the highest homeowners insurance in the state. It is also not gay friendly. Like 1972 Bible Belt mindset. Not one pride flag during pride month. Apparently it’s bad for business and vandalism occurs. So use caution with small towns 45-60 minutes commute from top gay cities. In my 10 years, I have been to Orlando once for a bear festival. Tolls are $18 round trip. Rush hour makes the commute up to 3 hours one direction. There is limited parking and bars close early since the PULSE night club shootins’. I do agree that Detroit is slowly coming back. Except for Columbus and Toledo, I am very wary of the rest of the state from my early 20’s experiences. But I have not visited in many years. Pittsburgh and St. Louis are definitely wonderful places where you can walk to local restaurants, gay bars. I’m not a drinker but the reality is there is always a thriving gayborhood wherever a cluster of bars are at. If a city has only one gay bar, that should be a red flag that the conservatives are pushing us out. Always research the gay club scene if undecided.

    What about Brookings, Oregon?

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney 13 днів тому

      Unfortunately Brookings hasn’t requested to be rated by HRC for their Municipal Equality Index, which is on e of the foundational pieces we use to determine if a city is LGBTQ+ welcoming in both policies and protections for queer folks. And since we’re a 2 person shop we cannot research all 45,000+ towns in the US. What are your thoughts on Brookings?

    You mentioned sharing failures and I"ll share some of mine. 1. I didn't get started sooner. In my 20s, I thought I had all the time in the world to figure out what I wanted to do job/career wise. That's just not true. The more time you waste being unfocused, the harder it will be for you. 2. Not saving sooner. I probably would have been able to retire at 52 with more money than I have now had I just started saving and investing 2 years earlier. 3. Moving money from one mutual fund to another, usually at inopportune times. It's better to just leave your money in a diversified mix. This series of mistakes has probably cost me $100,000 by now. That extra 100k means I could probably be retired now, 10 months earlier than I currently plan. 4. Who you partner with is a huge deal. If you're with someone who has a bad money blueprint in their heads, its very unlikely to change, especially if they're age 30 or older. My ex was 20 years older than me and his money blueprint was set. He's now in his 70s and financially struggling. He's struggled financially off and on his whole life, but it's 10X worse when you're old. I certainly could have handled this aspect of our relationship with more tact, but I was young and didn't understand a lot of things at that time. The biggest thing is that most people are not rational long term thinkers about anything, especially money. There are a lot of emotional blocks, including childhood trauma, that keep people from handling money better. I didn't understand the emotional aspect of money AT ALL at the time. 5. Relationships matter. All kinds of relationships. People who are good at relationships (business, personal, romantic partner), have a leg up over those who aren't. I'm not awful at relationships, but I'm not great, either. So that has been a handicap.

  • @mysticaltyger2009
    @mysticaltyger2009 16 днів тому

    I also agree with what was said about options. Just having the option to do X or Y, even though I didn't know the specifics, was appealing to me. I didn't even need to have a specific thing in mind. But I knew I wanted to travel to different places doing more than just the tourist highlights. If I traveled somewhere I tried to go for at least 3 weeks. I took a year off from a job I didn't like in 2022 (FU money). Spending time with friends and family in different places (stays of at least one month in 2 different spots, short stays in other spots) was great. It's a lot easier and more fun to keep up with people when you're not working.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney 16 днів тому

      Love it! It’s great to have the options. That’s what financial freedom is all about; freedom to choose the life you want. It’s not about being a millionaire/billionaire. There are plenary of folks living amazing lives based on their values and they’re not incredibly wealthy

  • @mysticaltyger2009

    I started preparing for retirement in my mid 20s for several reasons: 1. I grew up in a family where I had that example of parents living below their means. House got paid off early. Ordinary cars paid for in cash. Avoiding debt other than a reasonable mortgage or a credit card that got paid off every month. That was my baseline normal. 2. I was always more of a saver than a spender. I think some of this is in-born. 3. I had a boyfriend in my late teens and early 20s who lived the opposite way. I really think he had some deep-seated emotional issues that made him feel like he didn't deserve money or financial stability. I didn't understand that at the time. But I did know I hated living in a way where I was often worried about paying the rent. 4. Once I left the boyfriend and got decent paying employment in my mid to late 20s, I was like "No how, no way am I EVER going to be broke again if I have any power to do otherwise". I didn't completely know what I was doing, but I started paying off debt and putting money in my retirement account at work right away as soon as I got a half decent paying job. And this was not a great paying job by any means, but decent. 5. I didn't really see any job / career path that seemed all that great. You know, do what you love and the money will follow kind of BS. Pretty much anything you try to make money at that you love, the joy goes out of it, at least for me. 6. I want the flexibility of not being tied down to a job to a specific location/employer. I'm 54 and should be able to retire next year at 55, when my pension from my old job kicks in. While about 50% of my income will be from the pension, the other 50% should be from savings/investments using the initial 4% withdrawal rate.

    This was a fantastically helpful episode. It's so funny - I just started this past week watching a friend's dog while he was traveling for work, and then another friend approached me to watch his pitties. He knew I had experience with difficult dogs, so he felt comfortable approaching me about.it. And here in this episode, you listed dog watching as the first item. Technically, I'm not retired, but since losing my job in a tech layoff last November, I've been living on VA disability, which barely covers my expenses, but this has been a big help. I live in NY and have a lot of people reach out to me from red states who want to get the f out of those places to somewhere they think will provide the enviornment they desire in the community around them - (I'm a queer NY real estate agent) - I even have clients moving from liberal Austin, because it doesn't work for them, to the Hudson Valley in New York because it's very LGTBQ friendly. I think people can find their community no matter where they live if they look for it. Unfortunately I think the red states are out to get us LGBTQ+ ppl right now. Hope the tide turns everything purple.

    Regarding Palm Springs healthcare: I couldn't disagree more with Mark Goldstein's statement about its healthcare. I've lived in Palm Springs since 2009. I have a Medicare Advantage plan, which, being an HMO, automatically narrows one's choices. I have never had a problem that wasn't well addressed. I've used two hospitals - Desert Regional in Palm Springs and Eisenhower in Palm Desert. Both are great facilities. There is no problem finding a doctor who isn't well addressed and sensitive to gay issues. I've lived in the Detroit area and within California, San Francisco, L.A., and now Palm Springs. For my healthcare needs Palm Springs fully comes through. I don't need to travel outside my area for doctors, sometimes need to wait 3 weeks, rarely longer, for doctor appointments which is on par with L.A. and San Francisco. Regarding overall cost of living and housing, yes, higher than the national average but much more reasonable than San Francisco, L.A., and San Diego.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney 21 день тому

      Oh, that's good to hear. We were kinda disappointed to hear that the healthcare in Palm Springs might not be that great. Goes to show that we all need to do our own research to see where is the most optimal for us.

    As someone who considers himself a YIMBY, I do think there are legitimate objections to large and/or multi story apartment buildings. I'm all for denser housing, but why build huge complexes owned by corporations that don't care about the people who live there? We need to build more duplexes and small apartment buildings and change zoning to make these types of buildings more economically viable. You touched on it in the video, but is all this red tape in the approval process really necessary? It sounds like a good chunk of it is not. I am concerned that we'll swing from one unhealthy extreme (single family housing only & sprawl in Red states to NIMBY-ism in blue states--to another--, which would be numerous, soulless, look-alike 5 story apartment complexes and condos I've seen built in the last 15 years.

    • @queermoney

      Thank you for sharing. We share your concerns about the extremes. There must be a healthy balance. Unfortunately, the extremists such up most of the oxygen, and once the red tape has been placed, it's usually hard to tear it up. Hopefully, the sensible prevail.

    It so sucks... As it is with most people, we're over it already! Enough politics. Enough of Trump. Enough of MAGA. Enough of not being able to spend just one day without hearing about what Trump did today or without seeing a Trump flag. For 8 years we have all been beaten down with it. ENOUGH! Currently living in a state governed by Pudding Fingers in high-lift shoes. Don't say Gay. Drag? Anywhere anyone under 18 can see you? That's a criminal offense! Sure, there are very good blue cities and towns in red states. However, even the most liberal or progressive place is still governed by the laws of the willfully ignorant and terminally stupid. A crystal blue pond surrounded by a lake polluted with red tide is not a very good option. Where can a gay woman, looking to retire early - without a lot of money - live in America, for well under $2000/mo (housing, utilities, cell phone, car insurance, food, etc), without ever seeing another MAGA hat or Trump flag, just because she wants to go buy a loaf of bread? Also, one other tiny caveat... I haven't seen a literal snowflake in 20 years! I'm melting in the shade, on a 100 degree Florida day. The thought of being buried under a 30 foot snow drift, in Buffalo, NY, doesn't sound very pleasing either!

    So if I make $2098 per month and starting receiving retirement at 65 and now I am 67. How much can I make in a part time job without having the government steal my money

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney Місяць тому

      I'm assuming that you've reached full retirement age, since you're most likely part of the population of folks during the phase into 67. So that means you'll have $1 deducted for every $3 you make over $22,320. In your case, based on the numbers you shared (and assuming the $2098 is earned income from a job), you make $25,176 per year ($2098 x 12), which is $2,856 over the amount before deductions start to happen. So your benefits would be reduced by about $952 for the year. I know it's frustrating, but it may help to remember that social security is supposed to be a safety net with the intent to help those that need it the most, not a savings/investing account where we get 100% or in the case of the majority of us multiples more than we ever put in. 😉

    • @daveschmitt4499
      @daveschmitt4499 Місяць тому

      @queermoney The $2098 is my retirement income. Not a job. I have been looking for a part time job because living on my retirement is impossible. I started collecting my retirement at the age of 65 but continued to work up until the 1st of April this year. And that's when I went with just retirement income.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney 29 днів тому

      @@daveschmitt4499Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. So you can earn up to $1,860 per month or $22,320 a year before your benefits would start to reduce. That’s a pretty good part-time income. 😉

    I admit I don't have much backup information. I don't believe the red states except for some cities have good medical care for gays. From Charlotte NC I moved to a rural town. Had 1 dentist for many years. A doctor put on my medical records that I was gay. Now I can't get my teeth cleaned in that office. Through the internet records of many medical practices are shared. If I lived in a big city or a blue state I would think twice about moving to a rural red state even though the financial cost is lower, the overall costs might be higher.
